The graves at the Striginsky cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod have gone underwater.
At the Striginsky cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod, serious flooding has been recorded: dozens, and according to eyewitness estimates, hundreds of graves have ended up in water up to half a meter deep. Under the layer of floodwaters, some fresh burials are partially hidden, causing shock and outrage among the relatives of the deceased. People believe that the situation worsened after work was carried out to clear and prepare new plots for burials.
Videos taken at the site and published on social media and video platforms show waterlogged areas of the Striginsky cemetery: large puddles surround the graves, with water reaching halfway up the gravestones in places. The footage shows that both old burials and graves with still fresh flowers and wreaths have been affected by the flooding. According to the video creators, the soil in several areas has begun to wash away, causing crosses and monuments to lean.
Relatives of the deceased claim that such large-scale flooding has not occurred here before, and serious problems began after the expansion work at the cemetery started. This concerns the preparation of new fields for burials in the so-called New Striginsky area, for which the city recently allocated hundreds of millions of rubles. People believe that during the clearing of the territory, drainage ditches may have been filled or damaged, and now meltwater and floodwater are flowing from the "fresh" area into the old quarters, where it stagnates.
In one of the videos, an eyewitness shows how water flows from the direction of the new field: there is visible piled soil, under which, according to locals, drainage systems used to run. Now, relatives assert, the water has nowhere to go, and it accumulates right on the graves. People fear that if this situation persists, the soil will continue to "shift," and some burials may be seriously damaged.
The administration of municipal cemeteries in Nizhny Novgorod stated that the cause of the situation was a powerful flood and abundant snowmelt this spring. Officials emphasize that such flooding is seasonal and occurs during periods of active water rise, and currently, pumping is organized at the site. According to the agency, equipment is already working in the area to lower the water level and ensure access to the burials.
