The Novo-Striginskoye cemetery was flooded in Nizhny Novgorod.
On April 14, 2026, at 18:14 SocietyNizhny Novgorod residents who came to the New Striginsky Cemetery on the eve of Orthodox Easter discovered flooded graves. In some places, the water reached 30-40 centimeters, preventing people from reaching the graves of their relatives, reports "KP-Nizhny Novgorod."
Visitors say that this area was previously considered dry and elevated. Even after heavy rains, there was no dampness here, but now the water has flooded the roads, and the ground over the graves has subsided. In several cases, the tombstones have tilted.
The asphalt road to the graves has partially gone underwater and in some places has been destroyed. Those who managed to reach the sections note serious damage.
Residents link the incident to the expansion work of the cemetery that began last year. According to them, nearby forests were cut down, the area was filled with sand, and the natural drainage of water was altered.
"Due to interference with nature, something went wrong, and water flooded the cemetery. Apparently, drainage was not thought through," say the Nizhny Novgorod residents.
City authorities have a different version. The Municipal Cemetery Management of Nizhny Novgorod stated that the flooding is related to heavy snowfall in winter and active melting of snow. According to specialists, moisture-saturated soils absorb water worse, which could have led to the flooding.
The institution reported that work is underway at the cemetery to eliminate the consequences. Round-the-clock water pumping is organized using pumps, drainage ditches have been laid, and constant monitoring of the water level is being conducted.
According to journalists, due to the flooding, many graves have subsided, and people will have to restore them at their own expense.
It was previously reported that the police became interested in the damaged gravestones at the Dzerzhinsk cemetery.
