A fox climbed a tree to escape the flood in the Nizhny Novgorod region — video

On April 14, 2026, at 15:41, Society: Employees of the Nizhny Novgorod Ministry of Forestry filmed a fox that climbed a tree to escape from the flood. Specialists noted that the flood that began in April affected not only populated areas and infrastructure but also the habitats of wild animals.

Each species reacts to the elements in its own way, depending on natural features and habitat. Large animals, such as moose, wild boars, and foxes, leave flood zones in advance and move to higher ground or small islands. Sometimes they have to swim across water barriers. Foxes can climb low-growing or branching trees in this process. Small and medium-sized forest dwellers seek shelter on hummocks, in dense underbrush, or on floating tree trunks. Aquatic animals demonstrate particular adaptability: beavers can quickly build temporary shelters, while muskrats move to the upper levels of their burrows and stay there until the water recedes. Burrowing animals temporarily relocate to other shelters or move to drier areas during floods.

The ministry reminded that during natural disasters, including floods, hunting animals that find themselves in helpless situations is strictly prohibited. This requirement is enshrined in an order from the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia. Violations are subject to administrative liability, and in some cases, criminal liability.

In connection with the floods, state hunting inspectors have intensified patrols in flooded areas. Their task is to identify and prevent poaching and minimize additional threats to animals.

Earlier, it was reported that, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 13 residential and 57 summer houses, 1,200 household plots, 14 low-water bridges, and 10 sections of roads remain flooded in 23 municipalities of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Meanwhile, in some places, the flood is already receding.
