Cosmonautics Day was celebrated in Nizhny Novgorod.
108 minutes - that’s exactly how long Yuri Gagarin's legendary flight lasted. On April 12, the whole country celebrates the 65th anniversary of the first human flight into space. When talking about this great historical event, of course, Yuri Gagarin comes to mind. Alexey Makarov, a visitor to the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium: "It was something supernatural. A person flew into space for the first time. It was a great celebration. Not only for our country. It was a great celebration for the whole world." Alexey Sergeyev, a visitor to the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium: "It was spectacular. 1961 was a great year. Each of us wanted to become an astronaut in childhood." In Nizhny, space is literally "embedded" in the urban environment. Gagarin Avenue, Tereshkova Street, and Cosmonaut Komarov Street, Zvezdinka - our toponymy turns into a map of cosmic memory. Natalia Efremova, correspondent: "The main epicenter of the celebration is the Georgy Grechko Planetarium. The dome diameter is 16 meters. The first digital planetarium in Russia. A true cosmic heart of Nizhny Novgorod." Anastasia Romanenko, a visitor to the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium: "Today we came to the planetarium with children, together with the class. Both children and parents are coming." Dzhavair Azerli, a visitor to the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium: "We came to the planetarium today with children for a space program dedicated to the anniversary of the first human flight into space. And all last week we talked about it with the children and watched various educational films and cartoons with the younger ones." Sergey Khorev, a guide at the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium, tells what particularly surprises children when they come here for the first time. Sergey Khorev, guide at the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium: "Of course, they are amazed by the huge meteorite. They have never seen such large stones. They try to lift it. And it weighs as much as 15 fat cats: 85 kilograms. Of course, it’s amazing." And this is a model of the International Space Station at a scale of 1:100. Sergey Khorev, guide at the G. M. Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium: "This is the largest spacecraft to date. Its size is comparable to a football field. If compared to the 'Titanic', it’s still a bit smaller. It weighs 420 tons. Still large and heavy. It consists of 17 modules. The first module that was launched into space is our Russian module. The cargo block 'Zarya'." Space plans were also fulfilled by Nizhny enterprises. The aircraft manufacturing plant "Sokol" created components for the communication system and the famous "Buran", and in Nizhny, a television system was developed, which was used to obtain the first images of the far side of the Moon. Residents of Gorky also participated in the construction of the Baikonur cosmodrome.
Today, traditions continue. Lobachevsky University, together with "Roscosmos", implements educational projects, and last year launched its own satellite "Lobachevsky" into orbit. So, the Nizhny Novgorod region in this cosmic story is not just a spectator, but a full-fledged participant. In this regard, it is pleasant to realize that our city is not only the Volga and the Kremlin, but also an avenue leading to the stars. Author: Natalia Efremova, Vasily Nesterенко
