26 Nizhny Novgorod residents fell ill with hantavirus in 2026.
April 13, 2026 12:50 Society NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" - Maria Orlova In the Nizhny Novgorod region, 26 cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), known as mouse fever, have been recorded since the beginning of the year. This was reported at a press conference by Natalia Sadykova, deputy head of the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor, as conveyed by a correspondent from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod." According to her, 43 cases were registered during the same period last year. However, specialists are not rushing to declare a favorable situation. "The season is just beginning, so we are not saying that we are in a good zone. There are still significant risks for us, especially since spring is warm — rodents have become active and will move closer to human dwellings," Sadykova noted. She emphasized that the most dangerous period is during spring cleaning when the risk of contact with contaminated dust increases. The main rise in morbidity usually begins in May. However, current figures remain lower than last year's, which was characterized by a spike in morbidity. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is an acute viral disease, the carriers of which are mice and other small rodents. Most often, infection occurs through airborne dust — when inhaling dust contaminated with animal excretions. Contact transmission is also possible — through damaged skin or bites, and foodborne — when consuming contaminated food and water. The infection is not transmitted from person to person. Among the main symptoms are a rise in temperature to 38–40 degrees, headache, nausea, sore throat, inflammation of lymph nodes, lower back pain, and rash. The disease is accompanied by pronounced intoxication and can lead to impaired kidney function. To reduce the risk of infection, specialists recommend regularly ventilating rooms, cleaning while wearing masks and gloves, protecting homes from rodent intrusion, not consuming food contaminated by them, and thoroughly washing vegetables, fruits, and greens before eating. It was previously reported that infected rodents are found throughout the region, including Nizhny Novgorod. By the end of 2024, the region ranked among the top five subjects in Russia with the highest incidence of HFRS. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
