The international movement "Memorial" has been recognized as extremist and banned in Russia.
On April 9, 2026, at 18:55 Society The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation recognized the international public movement "Memorial"* as an extremist organization and banned its activities on the territory of the country. This was reported by 360.ru, citing the court's press service.
The court's ruling states that the activities of "Memorial" have a distinctly anti-Russian character and are aimed at undermining the foundations of Russian statehood, violating the territorial integrity of the country, as well as diminishing historical, cultural, spiritual, and moral values.
Six members of the movement were sentenced for calls to terrorism, justification of terrorist activities, or participation in terrorist acts. In addition, some structural divisions of the organization were recognized as foreign agents.
Recall that in December, security services veteran Alexey Leontyev gave a report in Nizhny Novgorod on the falsification of history using the example of the activities of the Foundation for Historical and Legal Enlightenment "Memorial." He noted that the substitution of facts and manipulation of sources are often used to form a distorted image of the past, undermining national identity and destroying historical memory.
