Fraudsters stole over 83 million rubles from Nizhny Novgorod residents in a week.

April 8, 2026 20:00 Incidents 66 crimes related to fraud were recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod region over the past week. The total damage exceeded 83 million rubles, reported the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The most common scheme was the "call from the bank's security service" — 34 such cases were recorded. Additionally, the criminals used fraud in online purchases and offers of extra income — with 9 episodes of each scheme. The police provided several characteristic examples. For instance, an 82-year-old resident of Arzamas received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as a lawyer for declaring funds. He convinced the pensioner to hand over all his savings supposedly for processing. The man packed 900,000 rubles and handed them to a courier near his home. A resident of Pavlov became a victim of a more complex scheme. In early 2026, he opened an online store selling gypsum bricks, after which he received an offer to create a business account on a social network. Then, the scammers, posing as promotion specialists, convinced him to pay for advertising services and "tax fees," as well as to register an electronic wallet. As a result, the man transferred 1,729,280 rubles to the criminals. Another case occurred with a resident of Nizhny Novgorod. She was offered a job in a messenger, but for "registration," they demanded she transfer money. After transferring 12,200 rubles, the "employer" stopped responding. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reminded that law enforcement and bank employees do not ask to perform transactions with funds over the phone. Residents are urged to be vigilant and not to hand over money to unknown individuals. It was previously reported that a 16-year-old girl from Nizhny Novgorod gave her parents' savings to scammers in foreign currency. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
