Flood in Nizhny Novgorod: new special equipment has taken to the streets

      On April 9, 2026, at 17:31 Society Six new high-capacity water pumping machines have arrived at road institutions and have already begun work on the streets of the capital of the Volga region. This was reported by Mayor Yuri Shalabaev, who inspected the equipment and spoke with the drivers. According to the city head, the current flood situation remains complicated but predictable. The decision to purchase additional equipment was made in advance - after record snowfalls, it became clear that the volume of meltwater would be significant. The new machines, which have greater power compared to those previously used, are already operating in the districts. As Yuri Shalabaev emphasized, preparations for the flood period were carried out in advance. Areas that are traditionally prone to flooding are under special attention - in particular, the areas near the Kudya River, as well as the private sector in the Avtozavodsky, Kanavinsky, Lenin, and Moscow districts.

      In each district, anti-flood teams have been formed, which work on problematic areas and respond promptly to residents' requests. The Director of the Emergency Situations Department of Nizhny Novgorod, Mikhail Baranov, reported that the situation is being monitored around the clock by emergency rescue units and district administrations in a state of heightened readiness. Nine anti-flood teams have been formed, with about 200 units of equipment involved, including about 60 water pumping devices - motor pumps, pumps, and channel flushing machines. Yuri Shalabaev specified that the water level in the Oka and Volga rivers exceeds 67 meters, while a level of 72 meters on the Baltic system is considered dangerous for the city. He reminded that in 2021, the water rose to 70 meters, which led to serious flooding of garden plots, and this experience is taken into account in current work. The mayor also stated that the city will continue to update its fleet of special equipment. During the inspection, he discussed the characteristics of the new machines with driver Ivan Baryshnikov. He noted that the new equipment is significantly more efficient: "On the old machines, the tank volume was smaller, and now one machine replaces three."

      Driver Sergey Chalov added that the equipment is characterized by high power and versatility - it can pump both water and silt from stormwater catch basins. According to him, the new tanks are made of stainless materials, which increases the lifespan of the equipment. Experienced driver Pyotr Kudryashov, who has been working on trucks for about 30 years, emphasized the comfort and reliability of the new machine. "It's comfortable to work. The visibility is good. It has many advantages: better work performance because it pumps water faster and completes its job more quickly," he said. Deputy Mayor Anton Maximov reported that at the request of the city head, road services are operating in an enhanced mode. Water pumping, cleaning, and road maintenance are being carried out around the clock. At the end of winter, specialists cleaned more than 5,300 stormwater catch basins. After the flood season, it is planned to start flushing stormwater systems and inspecting drainage channels. As Yuri Shalabaev noted earlier, he receives operational reports from city services twice a day.
