Mass poisoning in the Nizhny Novgorod region: more than 50 people affected

On April 8, 2026, 12:22, Society54 residents of the Uren district of the Nizhny Novgorod region went to the hospital with symptoms of intestinal infection. Five patients, including four children, have been hospitalized. They are in moderately severe condition. The situation was reported by the head of the district, Sergey Babintsev.

The first calls to the central district hospital began to arrive on the evening of April 5. On the same day, an operational headquarters was quickly formed with the participation of medical staff, housing and utilities specialists, and the consumer rights protection agency. Thanks to the measures taken, the spread of the infection was managed to be localized.

In the focal microdistrict — on the streets of Kontakt, Belyaeva, Kommunisticheskaya, Lenina, and Rechnaya — chlorination of the water was conducted on the night of Sunday. All children's institutions were switched to remote work mode to reduce contacts and lower the risks of further spread of the disease.

According to the head of the district, water samples from all city wells did not reveal pathogenic microflora or viruses. The samples taken on April 3 were also clean.

"Most likely, there was a one-time contamination either from floodwaters or sewage into the water supply. The source has not yet been found," Babintsev said, adding that traps have been installed on the water supply and sewage networks to locate the source.

To minimize contacts, schools, kindergartens, sports complexes, and other social institutions will remain closed at least until Thursday.

"We will urgently conclude a contract with specialized firms for the flushing of the entire water supply system. During this period, we will have to completely shut off the water supply, at least in the part of the city where the focal infection occurred, and ensure water delivery, which we are currently working on," the official said.

Vaccination against hepatitis A has also begun in the district. Sergey Babintsev emphasized that this is a preventive measure. The presence of the disease has not yet been confirmed.

The district administration notes that the situation remains tense but controlled. The possibility of a viral nature of the disease, including airborne transmission, is also not excluded.

Earlier, it was reported that in Bogorodsk, due to flooding, there are interruptions in water supply, as the filtration systems need to be flushed twice as often.
