More than 300 kg of seeds for reforestation have been prepared in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
On April 2, 2026, at 15:05, Society In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the processing of pine and spruce cones collected during the autumn-winter period has been completed. As a result, 367 kg of conifer seeds were obtained, including 26 kg with improved hereditary properties. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Forestry. "This year, 163 kg more forest plant seeds were harvested compared to last season's collection of forest seed raw materials. This became possible due to favorable weather conditions during the autumn-winter harvesting period, increased yields, and active participation in cone collection by the population, school forestry clubs, and forest users. Properly organized processing of cones allows for a stable supply of high-quality planting material necessary for the successful restoration of forests and the sustainable development of the forestry sector in the region," noted the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife Protection of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Roman Vorobyov. To ensure uninterrupted forest restoration work in the region, a reserve of forest plant seeds has been created, amounting to 2.5 tons. This covers the Nizhny Novgorod region's need for seed material for 5-6 years, guaranteeing the stability of planting material cultivation regardless of weather conditions and cone yields in individual years. The entire cycle of work, starting from the harvesting and processing of forest seed raw materials, storage of forest plant seeds, and ending with the cultivation of planting material with open and closed root systems, is carried out at the Semenovsky Special Seed Farm. "We strictly control the sowing qualities of forest plant seeds. Without confirmation of their compliance with regulatory indicators, the use of such seeds for forest restoration, as well as for growing seedlings and saplings from them, is unacceptable. We must be sure that new forests will grow viable and sustainable," added the head of the Semenovsky Special Seed Farm, Alexey Klenkov. As part of the federal project "Forest Conservation," which is part of the national project "Environmental Well-Being," large-scale activities for the restoration and conservation of forests are planned for 2026. The work will take place over an area of more than 14.4 thousand hectares, including artificial forest restoration over an area of 4.3 thousand hectares. It is worth noting that since 2025, in Russia, by the order of President Vladimir Putin, the national project "Environmental Well-Being" has been in effect, which fulfills tasks previously outlined in the national project "Ecology." The new national project aims to care for the environment and improve its comfort for human life. The national project includes six federal projects: "General Cleanup," "Water of Russia," "Conservation of Biological Diversity and Development of Ecotourism," "Forest Conservation," "Circular Economy," and "Clean Air."
