A roadmap for cooperation has been signed between Nizhny Novgorod and Novi Sad.
The head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, and the head of the Serbian city of Novi Sad, Zarko Michin, signed a roadmap for cooperation for 2026-2027. The document was signed during the visit of the Nizhny Novgorod delegation to Serbia, and the event was timed to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of sister city relations between the cities. In April 2006, the sister city agreement was signed by Maya Gojkovic, who was then the mayor of Novi Sad. She was present at the meeting, now serving as the President of the Government of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, the administrative center of which is the second largest city in Serbia, Novi Sad. Yuri Shalabaev noted that twenty years of sister city relations have been fruitful, as the cities are united not only by centuries-old history and spiritual closeness between the Russian and Serbian peoples but also by shared values.
"We have jointly implemented many bright projects in almost all areas: in the fields of economy, education, culture, sports, and tourism. Nizhny Novgorod enterprises regularly participated in the International Agro-Industrial Exhibition in Novi Sad. Young athletes—swimmers, volleyball players, football players—have repeatedly participated in tournaments in our cities. There has been an active inter-school exchange involving our Nizhny Novgorod gymnasiums No. 2 and No. 13 and the Novi Sad gymnasiums 'Isidora Sekulic' and 'Laza Kostic.' Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N.I. Lobachevsky has also actively developed many joint projects with Novi Sad educational institutions, including summer schools for Russian and Serbian languages. Bright cultural projects have been implemented in cooperation with the Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad. In addition, the Novi Sad delegation regularly participates in the International Forum 'Sister Cities and Partners' and the Day of the City of Nizhny Novgorod," said the mayor of Nizhny Novgorod.
Yuri Shalabaev noted that the relations between the cities have now reached a new level. For example, it is planned to expand cooperation in the field of tourism, and soon a direct flight connection will be established between Nizhny Novgorod and the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, from where it is just a short distance to Novi Sad. The head of Nizhny Novgorod invited colleagues and residents of the sister city to visit the capital of the Volga region.
In his channel on the messaging app Mah, Yuri Shalabaev also wrote that for Serbian tourists interested in Orthodox shrines and wishing to visit Nizhny Novgorod, rich in such shrines, the issue of providing assistance in organizing pilgrimage tours will be worked out. For his part, Zarko Michin, the head of Novi Sad, noted that Serbia and Russia have always been in close cooperation—they fought together against fascism during World War II and helped each other afterward.
"Serbian-Russian relations go far beyond diplomacy—they are a brotherhood that has withstood the test of the most difficult wartime. Today, our historical closeness has received its modern confirmation in the cooperation between our cities—Nizhny Novgorod and Novi Sad. And the visit of the Nizhny Novgorod delegation is a logical continuation of our fruitful cooperation for the benefit of our peoples," said Zarko Michin.
While in Serbia, the Nizhny Novgorod delegation plans to hold several meetings: with representatives of the business circles of Novi Sad and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, with the leadership of the University of Novi Sad, and also visit the Football Academy.
