Nizhny Novgorod oncologists joined the master classes of specialists from China.

Nizhny Novgorod brought together Russian doctors dealing with the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer. Leading specialists from the Russian Society of Colorectal Surgeons arrived in the capital of the Volga region to conduct two demonstration master classes. Another thematic master class was held simultaneously in the People's Republic of China, at the National Cancer Center in Beijing. A total of more than 600 doctors joined the broadcasts of these operations: over 100 people attended in person, and about 500 connected to the broadcasts online.

As reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary Research Institute of Clinical Oncology, in addition to the "live surgery," the master class program also included expert presentations and professional discussions. Doctors were trained in the most complex nuances of surgical mastery. The main goal is not just to completely remove the damaged tissues of the patient, but also to try to minimize surgical trauma and avoid complications in the postoperative period.

"Colorectal cancer currently occupies high positions in the structure of oncology morbidity, ranking second or third. Despite the successes of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, much depends on surgeries. Therefore, it is very important to show surgeons a model of careful yet radical surgery," emphasized one of the participants of the demonstration master class, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery at the Institute of Clinical Medicine of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, Inna Tulina.

According to the head of the Department of Surgery at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, Director of the Coloproctology and Minimally Invasive Surgery Clinic of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, Petr Tsarkov, it is the "live surgery" that opens the surgeon's consciousness.

"Live surgery" allows one to see what cannot be understood just from textbooks or even video materials – the nuances of techniques that remain "between the lines." This opens the way to proper surgery and the implementation of modern technologies. Our task is to bridge the gap between theory and practice so that surgeons can perform operations in full accordance with oncological principles. This directly affects treatment outcomes and the lives of patients," he concluded.

The Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reminded that the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary Research Institute is part of the flagship project "City of Health." This is one of three initiatives for the comprehensive development of hospital territories in the region, proposed by the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin. The "City of Health" has received support from the Russian government and the Ministry of Health of Russia, as well as federal co-financing. A key outcome of the project's implementation will be the creation of a dedicated cancer center in Nizhny Novgorod with specialized equipment, including PET-CT and a cyclotron.

According to the head of the 1st Oncology Department of Abdominal Oncology at the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary, Mikhail Terekhov, the continuous professional development of doctors is as significant a component of the "City of Health" project as the improvement of the material and technical base of medical institutions.

"Such master classes allow doctors not only to gain new knowledge but also to see modern technologies in action. This is an important step towards improving the quality of medical care for Nizhny Novgorod residents and developing the entire oncology service in the region," he summarized.

Let us remind you that the program for combating oncological diseases is one of the most important components of the national project "Long and Active Life." The national project has been implemented in the country since 2025 by order of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. It aims to increase life expectancy by 2030.
