The incidence of tuberculosis has decreased by 2 times in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

March 25, 2026 09:34 Society Over the past 10 years, the incidence of tuberculosis in the Nizhny Novgorod region has decreased by half. According to the results of 2025, the rate was 16 cases per 100,000 population, which is 1.4 times lower than the national average, reported the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor. In 2025, the coverage of children with immunodiagnostics, including the Mantoux test and Diaskintest, reached 97%. Fluorographic examinations were conducted for 75.5% of the adult population with a control level of 73.5%. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the tuberculosis mycobacterium. The main source of infection is a patient with an open form of the disease, less often an infected animal, particularly cattle. Transmission is possible through airborne droplets and dust, contact with contaminated surfaces, as well as through food — when consuming milk and meat from an infected animal. The incubation period can last from three months to several years. At-risk groups include young children, adolescents, the elderly, patients with HIV and AIDS, people with inadequate nutrition, those who often get cold, and those living in damp, poorly heated, and poorly ventilated spaces. To prevent tuberculosis in children, BCG and BCG-M vaccines are used. The vaccination is administered in the maternity hospital on the 3rd to 7th day of life. Vaccination protects against severe forms of the disease, including tuberculous meningitis and generalized tuberculosis, and also reduces the risk of latent infection progressing to an active form. Revaccination is performed for uninfected children aged 6-7 years. Preventive measures also include regular examinations for early detection of the disease: immunodiagnostic tests for children and fluorography for adults. Specialists emphasize that a healthy lifestyle, rejection of bad habits, proper nutrition, physical activity, time spent outdoors, timely treatment of diseases, stress reduction, and adherence to personal hygiene rules play an important role.
