Nizhny Novgorod scientists have patented an application for assessing brain aging.

March 24, 2026 16:26 Science Scientists from N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University have patented a development that allows for the assessment of the biological age of the brain and the overall state of cognitive health. As reported by the university's press service, the system is already operational in the form of a website and an application.

The platform "Cognitive Biological Age Calculator" determines the rate of brain aging and helps identify early signs of cognitive disorders. According to the developers, the accuracy of the model is comparable to methods based on MRI and EEG. Currently, the solution is being implemented in the practice of healthy longevity medicine at the state corporation "Rosatom" and the FMBA of Russia, and is also used in preventive medicine clinics.

The head of the research, director of the Institute of Aging Biology at N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University, Mikhail Ivanchenko, reported that the first release of the "Cognitive Clock" took place in May 2024 on the university's open platform. According to him, today it is a fully functional system with a proven scientific basis and registered intellectual property rights.

The service allows for the assessment of cognitive function status in 15 minutes and provides a detailed interpretation of the results, opening up possibilities for personalized prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

The development is based on the machine learning model Cognitive-Age-V, trained on data from over 1,800 people aged 20 to 85. The algorithm combines the results of five short tests assessing memory, attention, logical thinking, reaction speed, and color perception.

"Unlike chronological age, cognitive age reflects the actual state of neural processes. A decrease in reaction speed, deterioration of memory, and color vision may be associated not only with natural aging but also with the development of dementia, the consequences of diabetes, depression, or sleep disorders. In patients with dementia, the system recorded accelerated brain aging by an average of 15.4 years. For individuals with moderate cognitive impairments, this indicator was also increased by 7.6 years," noted Ivanchenko.

It was previously reported that a system is being developed in Nizhny Novgorod that recognizes human stress based on speech.
