The Nizhny Novgorod TV tower and NNGU will launch a series of light shows about great scientists.
March 20, 2026 17:26 Science A joint initiative of N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University and the regional branch of RTRS called "On the Wave of Discoveries" will kick off in Nizhny Novgorod. Throughout 2026, the television tower will serve as a venue for a series of light shows dedicated to scientists who have influenced the development of Russian and world science.
The project is timed to coincide with two anniversaries — the 110th anniversary of Lobachevsky University and the 25th anniversary of RTRS.
The first hero of the light program will be Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky. It was on March 20, 1956, that the name of the university was assigned to Gorky State University. On the 70th anniversary of this event, today, from 18:30 to 21:00, a light composition inspired by non-Euclidean geometry will appear on the television tower.
Nizhny Novgorod residents will be shown an optical illusion made of lines symbolizing curved space. In such geometry, through one point, not one, but many lines parallel to a given one can pass, and the sum of the angles of a triangle differs from 180 degrees. Lobachevsky's discovery was a true revolution in mathematics and expanded the horizons of research in physics and astronomy. In particular, his ideas allowed for a new perspective on the evolution of the Universe and the nature of black holes, where massive objects curve space.
The light scenario will be complemented by inscriptions on the media facade of the television tower — the project name, the scientist's name, the formulation of his key achievement, and the anniversary date will appear there.
Rector of N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University Oleg Trofimov thanked the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Radio and Television Transmitting Center for their cooperation and support in popularizing science.
He reminded that in January, the television tower already featured thematic lighting for the 110th anniversary of the university, and now the partners are launching a year-long project that will allow them to tell the city residents and guests about the people who created and continue to create the scientific glory of the country.
Director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of RTRS Vyacheslav Ulyashchenko noted that the "On the Wave of Discoveries" project shows that the educational and enlightening role of media today is no less significant than the entertainment role, and even complex scientific topics can be discussed in a modern and understandable way for people of different generations.
Until the end of 2026, the organizers plan to dedicate separate light installations to other representatives of N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University whose work has been significant for radio electronics, cybernetics, history, linguistics, and chemistry. The shows will take place approximately once a month — on important dates for the scientific community and professional holidays.
