A century anniversary is celebrated by a resident of Gorodets, an honorary citizen of the district, and a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Vasily Kuritsyn. The regional branch of the "Volunteers of Victory" shared the story of the centenarian: the movement's activists visited the birthday celebrant, who celebrated the holiday surrounded by family and loved ones.
Vasily Yakovlevich's combat path led him through Hungary, Romania, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, and he met victory in the Czech city of Pelhrzimov. For his courage and heroism, the veteran was awarded the Order of Glory III class and the Order of the Patriotic War II class, as well as the medals "For Military Merit" and "For Victory over Germany." He has carried the memory of those events through the decades: in May of last year, the front-line soldier was an honored guest at the anniversary Victory Parade on Red Square in Moscow.
After completing his military career, Vasily Kuritsyn headed the Gorodets People's House for 33 years, which later became the "Meteor" cinema. Even after officially retiring, he continued to work and actively participated in public life.
Vasily Yakovlevich is an example not only of courage but also of rare family loyalty: he and his wife Maria Akafyevna have been married for 75 years. The couple has two children, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
