      The week aimed at reducing mortality from external causes is being held at the initiative of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation from June 30 to July 6. Mortality from external causes raises particular concern in society, as in most cases these causes are preventable and, moreover, are characterized by relatively low age of death. External causes cannot be underestimated also because they lead not only to death but also to disability.

      In this class of causes of death, several groups of external causes are distinguished. In particular, Rosstat publishes mortality indicators from the following groups of external causes:

      * from accidental alcohol poisoning;

      * from all types of transport accidents, including road traffic accidents;

      * from suicides;

      * from homicides;

      * from injuries with undetermined intent;

      * from accidental falls;

      * from accidental drownings;

      * from accidental incidents caused by smoke, fire, and flames.

      Reducing mortality from external causes is addressed not only by medical professionals (their leading role is providing medical assistance, training the population in first aid) but also by many other agencies. For example, to reduce occupational injuries, there is a labor protection system; to reduce deaths in road traffic accidents, roads and special barriers are built, and preventive measures are carried out.

      The goal of the week is to raise public awareness:

      * about the algorithms for providing first aid;

      * about the connection between alcohol consumption and injuries.

      The Ministry of Health of Russia highlights alcohol consumption among other causes of mortality from external causes, as the problem of alcohol abuse remains relevant. This is confirmed by the high frequency of alcohol intoxication detected during forensic examinations of corpses. Up to 40,000 people die each year solely from fatal alcohol poisoning. However, alcohol poisoning is not the only and primary cause of mortality related to alcohol consumption. Fatal injuries sustained while intoxicated are quite numerous and varied: transport injuries, thermal injuries, various types of mechanical asphyxia, poisoning with narcotic substances. Many other causes include a significant percentage of homicides, suicides, premature mortality from cirrhosis, cardiovascular diseases, strokes, pancreatitis, respiratory diseases, malignant neoplasms. According to the opinion of several experts, the contribution of alcohol to overall mortality in Russia is 11.9%. Alcohol consumption is responsible for 67% of drowning cases, 67% of fires, and 42% of suicides. In 2024, nearly 3,000 people died in road traffic accidents caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol, and more than 16,000 were injured.
