Yellow fever: current risks
The holiday season is in full swing! When preparing for a trip to hot countries, it is essential to take care of your health. Specialists from the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing have talked about a dangerous disease known as yellow fever. Yellow fever is a naturally occurring viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. The disease exists in two epidemiological forms: jungle fever (transmitted by mosquitoes from infected monkeys) and urban fever (transmitted by mosquitoes from person to person). The latter causes most outbreaks and epidemics.
The clinical picture includes severe intoxication up to consciousness disturbances and heart activity, hemorrhagic syndrome, liver and kidney damage, and jaundice of the sclera. Natural foci of yellow fever are located in Equatorial Africa and North and South America. According to WHO, currently, the population of 42 endemic countries in tropical regions of Africa (28 countries), America (13), and the Eastern Mediterranean (1) is at risk. Yellow fever remains the only disease that requires vaccination upon entry into countries where there is a risk of infection. Vaccination is required for adults and children from nine months of age.
In the absence of vaccination proof, upon entering countries where yellow fever carriers are present, as well as when returning from such countries, travelers may be subjected to quarantine for 6 days, medical examination, or other measures up to denial of entry into the country. In addition to vaccination in countries endemic to yellow fever, it is necessary to: use effective repellents when outdoors; ensure that windows are screened and equipped with mosquito nets over beds; when outdoors, wear clothing that covers as much of the body as possible, and clothing may be treated with additional mosquito repellent products. #Rospotrebnadzor #sanitaryeducation
