The Nizhny Novgorod Region significantly expanded its video surveillance system in 2025 — more than 7 thousand new cameras were put into operation over the year. The regional video storage and processing system now contains over 25 thousand devices, 33% more than a year earlier, the press service of the governor and government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reports.
Most of the new cameras were installed in apartment buildings: in elevators, lobbies and intercoms — more than 7.5 thousand such devices. Another over 12 thousand cameras are integrated with third-party systems. They operate at “smart” bus stops, transport hubs, building entrance groups and in places of mass gatherings.
According to the region’s Minister of Digital Development and Communications Alexander Sinelobov, over the past three years video surveillance has noticeably contributed to a reduction in street crime. Modern video analytics help recognize license plates, detect crowds and abandoned items, and identify individuals using biometrics. Search accuracy already exceeds 90%.
Cameras are also used for city tasks: they count passengers at stops and monitor the fullness of garbage containers. In Nizhny Novgorod the “Digital City Officer” project is also operating; it monitors order in parks and public spaces and can automatically warn violators over loudspeakers.
