All city resources have been deployed to clear the snow in Nizhny Novgorod.

07 January 2026 19:09 Society All city services, contractors and management companies have been placed on an enhanced work schedule in Nizhny Novgorod. According to the latest forecasts, more than 50 centimeters of snow could fall in the city over three days — more than usually falls during the entire month of January.

Deputy head of the city administration Anton Maksimov said that, at the mayor Yuri Shalabayev’s instruction, all available resources have been mobilized for snow removal. He noted that inspections of streets are carried out several times a day, including at night, to monitor the progress of clearing roads, courtyards and public spaces. In his words, just-cleared sections are quickly snowed over again, so the entire cycle of work has to be repeated again and again.

Recall that more than 1,300 pieces of specialized equipment and over 3,500 workers are currently deployed in the city. Work is underway in all districts: on roads, in parks, squares and courtyards.

Maksimov explained that the cleaning follows a specific scheme. First the roads are treated with anti-icing materials, then mechanical clearing begins. This cycle repeats until the snowfall ends. At the same time, snow piles are formed, from which the snow is later hauled away. Priority is given to places where snow obstructs public transport, as well as stops and container sites.

Kirill Zhezlov, driver of a multi-purpose road vehicle at MBU "Center", said that the equipment goes out onto the streets without breaks — one shift replaces another according to schedule. He noted that traffic on the roads is heavy, especially in the morning when people are going to work, so they have to work carefully so as not to interfere.

According to him, when the main bulk of snow falls, the machines go out in columns of five to six vehicles and clear the entire roadway from the center to the curb.

Earlier it was reported that Mayor Yuri Shalabayev convened an operational headquarters in connection with the abnormal snowfall.

Due to the intensity of the precipitation, three outdoor ice rinks in Nizhny Novgorod will not operate on January 8.
