      A serious fire broke out in the village of Navaty in the Pilninsky district.

      According to the press service of the Russian Emergency Ministry for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, a residential house and an outbuilding were engulfed by fire. The area of the blaze was about 170 square meters.

      During the debris clearance, rescuers discovered the body of a deceased man. His identity is currently being established.

      Preliminary information indicates that the tragedy may have been caused by carelessness while smoking.

      The Russian Emergency Ministry staff remind: observing basic fire-safety rules is critically important. Smoking requires particular caution — do not leave lit cigarettes unattended, especially near flammable materials. It is also extremely dangerous to smoke while intoxicated. Any neglect of these measures can lead to irreparable consequences.

      Earlier it was reported that in the first three days of 2026, 32 fires occurred in the region, resulting in five deaths.
