New Year holidays should bring children joy and rest, but should not harm their health. The Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reminded parents how to properly organize schoolchildren’s and toddlers’ festive days.
Chief physician of Children’s City Polyclinic No. 39 of the Sovetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, Inna Kondratyeva, emphasized that maintaining the usual daily routine remains the basis for good well‑being.
According to her, even during the holidays it is important to stick to the established schedule. This will help children return to school more easily after the break and avoid overfatigue. Special attention should be paid to December 31 and January 1 — on these days the emotional tone is particularly high. Parents should ensure that children do not go to bed too late, and toddlers can be given a daytime rest.
In addition to routine, nutrition is also very important. Inna Kondratyeva recalled that the festive table often abounds with tasty but heavy foods, which can lead to digestive problems and allergic reactions. To avoid this, she recommended planning the child’s menu in advance.
The doctor advises excluding fatty, spicy and salty dishes, marinades and smoked foods. Instead, the table should feature light and healthy products: vegetable salads, fresh fruits and berries, and one favorite sweet treat. On the other days of the holidays it is desirable to adhere to four meals a day so that the child receives all the necessary nutrients. The diet should include lean meats (beef, veal), poultry (turkey, chicken), dairy and cultured dairy products, whole-grain cereals, vegetables and fruits. It is also beneficial to include fish and eggs 2–3 times a week. Sweets are not forbidden, but should be consumed in moderation.
The doctor paid special attention to hydration. Even if a child drinks juices, compotes or tea, it is important that they receive a sufficient amount of plain water.
The third important point for healthy holidays, the pediatrician named, is regular walks. Despite the cold, they help strengthen the immune system and improve mood. The doctor recommends walking for at least two hours a day, especially in sunny weather, if the temperature allows.
Walks can be made interesting — sledding, skiing, playing outside. This not only promotes physical activity but also strengthens family relationships.
Inna Kondratyeva also reminded about the importance of proper winter clothing. It should be warm, comfortable and layered so the child can move freely and not become chilled. Hats, scarves, gloves and warm footwear should be used without fail.
It should be recalled that caring for the health of children and mothers is among the tasks of the new national project "Family", which was launched in Russia in 2025 on the instructions of President Vladimir Putin. It continues the national projects "Demography" and "Culture" and is aimed at supporting families, improving the quality of medical care and creating conditions for active longevity.
Earlier, nutritionist Ekaterina Kulova spoke about which sweets are best to avoid at New Year.
