The Ministry of Science and Higher Education will be established in the Nizhny Novgorod Region on January 1.

      26 December 2025 14:28 Science Nizhny Novgorod Governor Gleb Nikitin announced a change in the structure of the regional government effective 1 January 2026.

      "We live in a dynamic time: the country, our region and the state's priorities are changing before our eyes. The strategic goals for many years ahead are set before us by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. And the authorities must respond to these goals not in a piecemeal way by implementing discrete programs and initiatives, but essentially, wholly, structurally," the head of the region wrote on his Telegram channel.

      Thus it was decided to create a Ministry of Science and Higher Education. This is especially timely during the Decade of Science, which Putin previously declared, the head of the region emphasized.

      "It's no secret how many efforts we direct toward innovative development, the modernization of the economy, and increasing labor productivity to boost the region's competitiveness," Nikitin added.

      According to him, the mission of the new ministry will be to systematically and dynamically move the Nizhny Novgorod Region forward in terms of developing and implementing the best engineering solutions, as well as creating high-tech products.

      The current Ministry of Education and Science will be transformed into the Ministry of Education. It will focus on preschool, school and secondary vocational education.

      The staff of the new agency will be formed from employees of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. It will be included in the bloc of Deputy Governor Andrey Sanosyan; the work of the ministry will be overseen by Deputy Chair of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ekaterina Solntseva. She will also lead the agency until the new minister's candidacy is approved.
