A memorial plaque was installed on the façade of building No. 12 on Semashko Street in Nizhny Novgorod in honor of Soviet hockey player, Olympic champion and three-time world champion Alexander Vikentyevich Skvortsov. It was in this building that the athlete lived.
At the unveiling ceremony, the city head Yuri Shalabaev noted that Skvortsov was a true legend for the boys of the Avtozavodsky district. The mayor recalled how, as a child, he received a hockey stick that had belonged to Skvortsov himself.
"Alexander Vikentyevich Skvortsov is a pride of both Nizhny Novgorod and Russian hockey. Thanks to his perseverance and talent he made a huge contribution to promoting our legendary team Torpedo and to the development of hockey in general. The name of the hockey player Skvortsov is known worldwide, and we, his fellow countrymen, carefully preserve the memory of this great athlete and want our young hockey players to know him and look up to him," emphasized Dmitry Kabaylo, Minister of Sport of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The athlete's widow, Marina Skvortsova, admitted that the unveiling of the memorial plaque was a joyful event for their family.
"This shows that my husband is remembered, that his merits to our Motherland and to the city are not forgotten. The fate of Alexander Skvortsov is an example of how an ordinary boy from a simple family, through his hard work, was able to achieve such high results. It is an example for everyone: nothing is insurmountable, you just have to work hard," she said.
Torpedo veteran Vyacheslav Ryanov, who played alongside Skvortsov, noted that he was not only an outstanding hockey player but also a true patriot of his city. Throughout his career he played only for the Gorky team and devoted 15 years to it. He became the club's leading scorer, top goal-scorer and top assist provider in its history.
Recall that the center for the development of youth sports and the training of hockey players in the Avtozavodsky district will be named after Alexander Skvortsov.
Earlier it was reported that Torpedo coach Dmitry Boginov was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Russian hockey.
