A courier in Nizhny Novgorod saved a pensioner's money from scammers — video

      In the Leninsky District of Nizhny Novgorod a courier showed vigilance and prevented a major fraud that could have left a 76-year-old woman nearly 600,000 rubles poorer.

      According to Police Department No. 3 of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for Nizhny Novgorod, a 41-year-old employee of a courier service reported to the duty unit. The woman said that at one of the houses on Grekov Lane she received from an elderly client a package containing groceries and personal items intended for shipment to another region.

      However, suspecting something was wrong, the courier decided to check the contents. Inside she found a container with a large sum of cash — 595,000 rubles. Realizing she might be dealing with a fraud scheme, she personally delivered the money to the police.

      Law enforcement quickly identified the pensioner and found that she had been receiving alarming calls from unknown individuals for a week. The scammers claimed that an "unauthorized auto-payment" had allegedly been made from her bank account to an unfriendly country.

      To avoid supposed criminal liability, the fraudsters demanded that the elderly woman withdraw all her savings and hand them over for "verification" to a non-existent "audit chamber." Following their instructions, the pensioner hid the money among personal items and groceries, prepared a parcel for her "grandson," and gave it to the courier.

      In the end the funds were returned to their owner. Police officers held a preventive talk with the woman and reminded her about common telephone fraud schemes.

      A criminal case has been opened on the facts of the incident under the elements of an offense provided for in Part 3 of Article 30 and Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — attempted fraud.

      Earlier it was reported that a taxi driver in Nizhny Novgorod prevented a fraud against a 92-year-old pensioner.
