They plan to restart the former Volkswagen car plant in Nizhny Novgorod.
01 December 2025 14:46 Economy Russian authorities intend to resume operations at large automobile production sites located in Shushary and Nizhny Novgorod, TASS reports.
According to the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Anton Alikhanov, this concerns the former Toyota plant in St. Petersburg and the facility in Nizhny Novgorod where Volkswagen vehicles were previously assembled.
The minister said that in 2026 it is planned to legally formalize agreements with new partners, after which the process of restarting production will begin.
Earlier the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade noted that most car plants abandoned in Russia by foreign companies have already resumed operations. They are now functioning under the management of Russian investors who cooperate with partners from friendly countries. These companies have committed to expanding the localization of production.
Recall that Nizhny Novgorod-based Volga did not confirm the authenticity of a video showing a Geely Atlas under its brand. And in September 2025, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov announced the start of assembly of "Volga" cars in Nizhny Novgorod in spring 2026.
