Authorities of the Nizhny Novgorod Region have decided not to introduce new restrictions on the sale of alcoholic products in 2026. This was reported to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" by the press service of the regional government.
As the department explained, the draft law proposing amendments to the current regional law on the regulation of the circulation of alcohol-containing products will not be submitted to the Legislative Assembly for consideration before the end of the current year.
The draft law was intended to adjust the rules for the circulation of alcoholic products in the region to foster a healthy culture of alcohol consumption, improve quality of life and strengthen the demographic situation.
Authorities decided to postpone consideration of the initiative due to a decline in interest in alcohol among the region's residents. According to 2025 data, per capita alcohol consumption decreased by 14%. In addition, the regional budget has already lost about 1.5 billion rubles in excise revenues, which also indicates a reduction in demand for alcohol.
Against this background, interest in a healthy lifestyle is growing in the region. Over the past five years the share of Nizhny Novgorod residents who regularly engage in sports and physical exercise has risen from 47.5% to 60%.
Authorities also took into account the opinions of local business representatives before making the final decision.
Earlier it was reported that nearly 900 bottles of alcohol without a license were seized in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
