In Nizhny Novgorod, a 73-year-old woman fell victim to phone scammers and lost more than 3.5 million rubles.

According to the regional directorate of the Interior Ministry, unknown callers phoned the pensioner for a week, posing as employees of law enforcement agencies, a bank and government services. The callers convinced the woman that her savings were in danger and needed to be urgently transferred to a so‑called "safe account."

They suggested she use the services of a courier. Following their instructions, the pensioner withdrew money from her bank deposit and handed it over to a stranger.

The first meeting took place on a bench at October Square in the Nizhegorodsky District. There the woman handed over 1,398,773 rubles. Later she met the same courier twice more in Pushkin Park in the Sovetsky District. Each time she handed over 1,100,294 rubles.

The total loss amounted to 3,599,361 rubles.

The police opened a criminal case under Article 159, Part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — "fraud." This article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 10 years.

Law enforcement officers are now establishing all the circumstances of the incident and carrying out the necessary operational and investigative measures. Nizhny Novgorod residents are once again urged to be vigilant when speaking with strangers on the phone and not to make hasty financial transactions.

Earlier it was reported that two Nizhny Novgorod residents lost 7 million rubles when buying a car from scammers. Another Nizhny Novgorod woman sold an apartment and handed the 4 million rubles she received to scammers.
