The former head of the passport and visa center of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Tatyana Baranova, failed to challenge the sentence for taking a bribe. The First Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction only removed from the verdict the qualification of her actions as receiving a bribe for general connivance (Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). This information is contained in the case file database on the court’s website.
Recall that the former head and the chief accountant of the passport and visa center branch were arrested in May 2023. According to the investigation, from 2021 to 2023 Baranova, together with her deputy and through an intermediary, received a bribe of more than 15 million rubles for placing ATMs of a certain financial-credit organization in the center’s building. As a result, clients could pay for services exclusively through them. And in March 2023 she also demanded that her subordinates hand over part of their bonus payments to her two deputies.
Ultimately, the Nizhny Novgorod District Court convicted Baranova of exceeding official powers and receiving a bribe on an especially large scale. She was sentenced to 6 years in a penal colony and fined 30 million rubles. In addition, she was banned from holding managerial positions in the civil service for 8 years.
We add that Baranova’s accomplice received 8 years and 8 months of imprisonment with a fine. She also appealed the sentence, but the court left it unchanged.
