The event was timed to coincide with Transport Workers' Day. A special excursion program was prepared for family members of participants in the special military operation (SVO). The visit to the exhibition was organized by the Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the United Russia party.
“For us it is especially meaningful that in the GAZ Museum — the legendary enterprise where the history of Russian automobile manufacturing was made — we can give the families of our heroes a few hours of rest and new impressions. Here, among the vehicles that forged victory in the Great Patriotic War and have served the country for decades, the connection between the feats of the past and the present is particularly felt. Events like this are not just excursions, but another way to say thank you to those who are now defending our country’s interests,” said Dmitry Filipenko, head of the Nizhny Novgorod regional executive committee of the United Russia party.
The museum houses a rich collection of authentic items: more than 3,000 exhibits and 43,000 items in storage. The exhibition tells the story of the history and development of the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) and domestic automobile manufacturing.
An important chapter in the history is the plant during the Great Patriotic War. Tour participants learned how production was organized during that period. The Gorky Automobile Plant was the first enterprise where “frontline brigades” appeared. GAZ produced the legendary “polutorka” trucks, various military products, light tanks, self-propelled artillery mounts, armored cars and even aerosleds. The most difficult year for the enterprise was 1943.
“The Germans tried to take revenge after their defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad and wanted to stop the supply of Soviet troops. The Gorky Automobile Plant, as an important arsenal of our Motherland, was subjected to seven massive bombing raids. One of the most terrible was on the night of June 6–7, 1943. The Germans announced that GAZ had been destroyed. The damage was indeed colossal. But the plant, through immense efforts, withstood and continued to operate,” said Sergey Myasnikov, a guide at the GAZ Museum.
Visitors were traditionally very interested in the vehicles. The exhibition halls present GAZ’s main model range of 40 vehicles, from passenger cars to trucks. In addition, guests saw engineering developments.
It should be recalled that supporting participants in the special military operation and their family members is a priority area of the party’s work and one of the main points of United Russia’s popular program. This initiative underlines the party’s steadfast commitment to providing comprehensive assistance and support to those who defend the country’s interests.
