In Russia, a proposal was made to introduce a ban on the sale of alcohol from December until the end of the New Year holidays. The initiative is aimed at addressing demographic problems and promoting a healthy lifestyle, including taking up sports.
The proposal to restrict alcohol sales came from Pavel Boloyangov, leader of the "Army of Sobriety" movement and a world champion in pankration. He cited the successful anti-alcohol campaign in the USSR that began in 1985. According to Boloyangov, a ban on alcohol during the New Year holidays could save thousands of lives and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Boloyangov claims that alcohol consumption during the New Year holidays often leads to tragedies, including poisonings and injuries. He believes that a ban on alcohol sales during this period could reduce the number of accidents.
The initiative has sparked debate among experts. Some see it as an opportunity to improve the demographic situation and reduce the number of alcohol poisonings. Others believe such a ban would lead to growth of the illegal market.
For example, Pavel Shapkin, chairman of the National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights and head of the Center for the Development of National Alcohol Policy, believes that Boloyangov's initiative will not receive legislative approval. In his view, a complete ban on alcohol sales would lead to growth of the shadow market and would not solve the problem of excessive consumption.
Shapkin told 360.ru that it is important not only to limit access to alcohol but also to shape a healthy attitude toward its consumption. He proposes strengthening anti-alcohol campaigning, especially among young people, and restricting the depiction of alcohol consumption in the media and in films.
In his opinion, the problem of alcoholism in Russia is much deeper and requires a comprehensive approach. He points to the need to change the mentality of society and to create conditions for a healthy lifestyle.
