Nizhny Novgorod Oblast has entered the top five in the Volga Federal District by number of invention applications.

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast was among the top five leaders of the Volga Federal District in terms of the number of invention applications based on the results of 2024. The region filed a total of 277 applications, of which 35% came from individuals and 30% from universities, Rospatent reported.
It was noted that the Volga Federal District as a whole ranked second among all federal districts of Russia by the number of invention applications. Five regions of the VFD showed growth in this area, and in eleven regions the number of applications for utility models increased. Experts attribute the success to the sustained development of the innovation environment and support measures, including the implementation of Rospatent’s proposals.
"Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is among the regions actively introducing support measures for the development of inventiveness, including lending secured by intellectual property," the agency said, adding that the region is known for strong schools in radiophysics, electronics, nuclear physics and microbiology, and also has a large number of processing enterprises.
Priority areas of Nizhny Novgorod inventions include medical technologies, special machinery, transport and measurement technologies. The leaders in the number of patent applications were the Russian Federal Nuclear Center — VNIIEF (166 applications over three years) and the R.E. Alekseev Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University (125 applications over the same period).
In 2024, organizations in the region reported to Rospatent the use of 835 inventions and utility models. Most of these reports came from research institutions, confirming the active implementation of developments into practice.
Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is also actively developing the tourism sector, as evidenced in particular by a rise in interest in branding. In 2024 entrepreneurs from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast filed more than 2,100 trademark applications, 7% more than in 2023. The total number of active trademark certificates in the region is approaching 10,000.
An additional factor strengthening the region’s tourist appeal is its rich heritage of folk arts and crafts. Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is known for brands such as Semyonov Khokhloma, Gorodets painting, Pavlovsk artistic products, Semyonov matryoshka, Semyonov spoon, Shakhun weaving and Polkhov-Maidan painting.
