      With the closing of the fire-hazard season on the lands of the forest fund of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, activities have begun to bring sites used for timber harvesting into proper condition. Forest users have begun the mandatory cleaning of clearcuts and the disposal of logging residues — these are branches, treetop sections of trunks and small-diameter wood that are produced during felling. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Forestry.

      “Ensuring the proper sanitary condition of our forest stands is the most important preventive measure to prevent the occurrence of ignitions. Improper cleaning of clearcuts is a risk for the emergence of large forest fires. Legislation requires that lessees conducting timber harvesting ensure the proper removal of logging residues. Thus, this year we plan to bring 1,650 hectares of forest fund land into proper condition, and as of today 50 percent of the planned work volume has already been completed,” noted the Minister of Forestry and Protection of Wildlife Objects of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Roman Vorobyov.

      To clean a clearcut, logging residues are gathered into piles or windrows, and then, during the low-fire-risk period, burned. The burning process is carried out in locations that exclude the possibility of damaging young stands, young coniferous growth, seed trees and other valuable forest assets.

      Ministry specialists monitor the execution of these works, checking for the presence of mineralized protective strips and the equipping of clearing zones with modern firefighting equipment.

      Methods for disposing of logging residues are chosen based on the natural and climatic characteristics of the territory. For example, on sites with peat-bog soils, burning is categorically prohibited due to the risk of underground peat fires. Instead, lessees chip the wood waste and leave it in place so that it decomposes naturally by biological means. This approach helps enrich the soil with valuable organic components and increase its fertility.

      All work on clearing clearcuts of logging residues must be completed before the start of the 2026 fire-hazard season.
