Four central district hospitals – Uren, Tonkino, Sharanga and Vetluga – will be merged into a single Northern Interdistrict Medical Center. The Uren Central District Hospital will become the main institution, and the other hospitals will be reclassified as branches. The reorganization is planned to be completed by April 2026, the regional health ministry reported.
The main goal of the merger is to improve access to medical care for residents of the four municipalities, whose combined population is about 58,000. By consolidating the structure, the medical center will be able to attract more specialists in narrow fields and make more efficient use of equipment and transport.
This was discussed at a meeting held on October 31 at the administration of the Uren district. Participants included Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Andrey Checherin, the region’s Minister of Health Galina Mikhaylova, district head Sergey Babintsev, and heads of medical institutions.
"The merger creates a modern medical complex with a staff of 1,300. This will make it possible to flexibly organize patient intake across different districts, provide specialist consultations and employ new doctors," Sergey Babintsev said.
According to the regional health ministry, Uren Hospital was chosen as the lead facility due to its developed infrastructure. The institution has an inpatient department with 225 beds, including a primary vascular unit, and a polyclinic designed for 750 visits per shift.
"Now, if a small district has 11,000 residents, it is difficult to maintain a permanent cardiologist post there. But within an interdistrict center covering all 58,000 residents, it is possible to hire several cardiologists and organize their consultations in each district," explained acting director of the center Andrey Sazonov.
Andrey Checherin and Galina Mikhaylova evaluated the work of the Uren Central District Hospital. They visited the women’s clinic, renovated under the "Protection of Maternity and Childhood" project of the national "Family" project, inspected the vascular unit, and spoke with medical staff and patients.
"I am receiving care here during my third pregnancy. Conditions have improved — new renovations, modern equipment. And the doctors, as always, are attentive and professional," patient Tatyana L. said.
"The food is tasty, the beds are comfortable and have remote controls. Everything is fine," shared Leonid, a patient from the Tonkino district.
Young specialists also spoke about their work. Traumatologist Otabek Hakimov, who completed his residency at PIMU, returned to his native district through a targeted placement. He now plans to develop trauma care and introduce new treatment methods.
"I was provided with housing and supported at the start. I want patients with serious injuries to be able to receive care here without having to travel to large cities," the doctor said.
In 2026 the Uren Central District Hospital will celebrate its 150th anniversary. For the jubilee, it is planned to hold a scientific conference, publish a book on the institution’s history and organize celebratory events. As part of the modernization, landscaping of the grounds will continue: benches will be installed, the fence will be renewed, and the "Clean Sky" project will be completed.
Recall that the national "Family" project, launched in 2025 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is aimed at comprehensive support for families. It continues initiatives from the "Demography" and "Culture" projects and includes measures to improve medical care, develop infrastructure and create conditions for active longevity.
