How will Nizhny Novgorod's bus routes change from January 1?

From January 1, 2026, new bus and electric-bus routes will appear in Nizhny Novgorod, and some existing ones will be changed. Details were shared by the region’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Denis Ryabinin.

According to him, the changes are aimed at improving the quality of transportation, optimizing routes and taking residents’ requests into account. Additional requirements will be imposed on carriers, including private companies. The transition to mid- and large-class buses continues. The minimum capacity of the new vehicles is 70 passengers.

      New routes

Bus No. 19 will run through the entire Bolshoye Kozino settlement to Dubravnaya Street, providing stable connections to the city.

“We will pay the carrier extra so that it completes 100% of the trips,” Ryabinin noted.

Bus No. 42 will connect the Kuznechikha-2 residential complex with the Vysokovo settlement. In the future the route may start from Freedom Square. It is being introduced due to overcrowding on the electric buses traveling to the opera theater from Minin Square.

Earlier it became known that the existing Route No. 42 stopped operating from November 1 due to a lack of companies willing to service it.

Route No. 79 from Nagulino to Park Kultury is also being launched. It will provide evening transportation for residents from the metro to Leskova Street, Monchegorskaya Street and the Nagulino settlement. Its introduction is accompanied by an adjustment to Route No. 75.

      Changes to existing routes

Bus No. 171 will run from Verkhniye Pechery to Selektsionnaya station, without detouring to the Oksky Bereg residential complex. The section from Selektsionnaya station to Oksky Bereg was removed due to low passenger flow.

“In the area of the Selektsionnaya station settlement, residential complexes are being built, and there is high demand for trips toward Afonino and Rodionova Street. Currently Route No. 171 runs through Mega, Selektsionnaya station and goes to the Oksky Bereg residential complex. We conducted an analysis of passenger flows which showed that between Oksky Bereg and Selektsionnaya station there are almost no passengers, and the section takes a lot of time. Therefore it was decided to shorten the route,” Ryabinin explained.

Route No. 47 will be extended along Heroes of Donbass Street to General Ivliev Street. Otherwise the route will remain the same from the Akademichesky residential complex. It will be served by mid-class buses.

Bus No. 85 currently runs from the Yug microdistrict to the Nitel factory. The route will be extended to Novaya Kuznechikha. The number of buses will be increased and the route will be moved to a gross contract.

Route No. 41 will keep the direction from the Tsvety microdistrict through Kuznechikha to Strelka metro station, but the route will be adjusted. Only large-class buses will operate on it and they cannot turn onto Osharskaya Street from Belinskogo Street. Therefore that turn will be removed from the route and buses will continue along Belinskogo to Lyadov Square.

Bus No. 92 will change its route: it will now run from Levinka to Usilova Street, shifting from Belinskogo Street to Gorky Street. This is related to changes to Route No. 41 and the need to relieve Minin Square.

According to Ryabinin, during peak hours a large number of passengers gather at Minin Square who are heading toward Gorky Square to transfer to the metro or go down to the lower part of the city.

“Therefore Bus No. 92, by starting its route from Usilova Street, will provide an additional option for passengers at Minin Square. They will be able to board a less crowded large-class bus and reach Gorky Square or the lower part of the city,” he explained.

Route No. 70 will begin at the Karl Marx roundabout; the section through “Seventh Heaven” and Meshchersky Boulevard will be removed — trolleybus service is planned to be strengthened there. The reason is low passenger flow.

Bus No. 38 will now run from Lyadov Square to Petryaevka; service will return via the Kanavinsky Bridge and Gorky Square.

Route No. 40 will be extended from the Indigo shopping center to Bogdanovich Street via the Olimp shopping center. According to Ryabinin, this will improve access to School No. 800.

Bus No. 74 will now run from the Burnakovsky microdistrict to the Vysokovo settlement. The deputy minister said the changes are related to the extension of Route No. 40 and the need to relieve Minin Square.

Route No. 75 will start from Mostootryad; the rest of the route will remain the same. This decision is related to heavy traffic on Relsovaya Street and the need to stabilize service intervals.

Bus No. 59 will now run from the Yug microdistrict to Krasny Sormovo. According to Ryabinin, the route plays an important role in providing transport links between the Yug microdistrict, Molitovka and the Moskovsky district. However, given the low passenger flow to the Novaya Stroyka settlement, where Route No. 89 already operates, Route No. 59 is being extended to Krasny Sormovo, also covering central Sormovo.

Route No. 76 will be extended from Dubravnaya to the Moskovsky car market. This is related to the elimination of the vehicle layover near the station and the need to improve access to socially significant facilities.

Earlier it was reported that from November 1 a new electric-bus route E-16 would be launched in Nizhny Novgorod, linking the Shcherbinki microdistrict with Proletarskaya metro station. Also from that day the cashless fare on public transport in the Volga capital increased from 35 rubles to 40.
