Four new media classes have opened in schools in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Students from Gymnasium No. 2 in Nizhny Novgorod, Secondary School No. 16 in Pavlovo, the secondary school in Gorbatov, and Secondary General Education School No. 11 in Balakhna will learn the basics of the journalism profession.
As noted by the regional Ministry of Education and Science, the media centers in each of the listed educational institutions are well equipped. These centers will serve as the main venues for classes for students in the specialized classes.
“Equipping school press centers with modern equipment will make it more effective to learn the basics of journalism. The opening of media classes is a new step for students on their pre-professional path. We are confident that here they will learn to create quality media content and will be able to truly reveal their creative potential,” said Elena Okunkova, rector of the Nizhny Novgorod Institute for the Development of Education.
In specialized lessons, students will write texts in various genres, conduct interviews, prepare analytical and news materials, create video and photo content, and use social networks as a tool of modern journalism.
The regional Ministry of Education noted that there are now 12 specialized classes in the region designated as “journalism” classes. In addition to Nizhny Novgorod, Pavlovo, Gorbatov and Balakhna, future media workers are being trained in the schools of Vorsma and Lukoyanov. Children are taught by experienced journalists, including staff from district newspapers and TV channels, as well as teachers from N. A. Dobrolyubov Nizhny Novgorod State Linguistic University (NGLU) and N. I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University (NNSU).
“We take a systematic approach to organizing career guidance events and creating specialized classes in schools. The main goal is to help children make a truly informed choice about their professional path. To date, more than 1,200 specialized classes in various fields are already operating in the Nizhny Novgorod region, including natural science, medical, pedagogical, agricultural and other directions,” explained Mikhail Puchkov, Minister of Education and Science of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
The ministry pays attention not only to students’ training but also to teachers themselves. This week, a regional seminar on the operation of specialized media classes was held at School No. 123 in Nizhny Novgorod. It brought together representatives of municipal education authorities, school principals, teachers and academic partners. Participants were given a tour of the school’s press center, where students independently shoot and edit videos, record podcasts and work on the school radio.
The director of School No. 11 in Balakhna, Natalia Lozgina, shared her experience of opening a media class at the school.
“We now have a pre-professional media class at our school. It all began back in 2012 with our journalism club, which later ‘grew into’ the school press center with its own newspaper. That experience showed that the students have a great interest in media, so we decided to give them the opportunity to get to know the profession more deeply and to implement their creative ideas,” Natalia Lozgina said.
“As real journalists we draw up a media plan and enter school events and important dates into it. We come up with various segments, write texts for them and shoot videos. We also have a school radio. Depending on the topic, we invite teachers, our graduates and students, record different programs and go on air to the whole school on Mondays,” shared Alexander Kuznetsov, an 8th-grade student at School No. 123.
It should be recalled that creating opportunities for children to receive a quality education is one component of the national project ‘Youth and Children.’ It is being implemented at the direction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and carries out tasks previously provided for in the national projects ‘Education’ and ‘Science and Universities.’ The new national project includes nine federal projects and programs: “Russia – a Land of Opportunities,” “We Are Together,” “Russia in the World,” “All the Best for Children,” “Leading Schools,” “Teachers and Mentors,” “Creating a Network of Modern Campuses,” “Universities for a Generation of Leaders,” and “Professionalitet.”
