The procedure for assigning a child's name is strictly regulated by law. The Main Civil Registry Office (ZAGS) of the Nizhny Novgorod Region told NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" that when registering a name it is not permissible to use digits, alphanumeric designations, numerals, symbols and characters that are not letters (except for a hyphen), or any combinations thereof.
In addition, obscene words, as well as words and expressions indicating ranks, positions or titles, cannot be used. These restrictions are established by Article 58 of the Family Code of the Russian Federation and Article 18 of Federal Law No. 143-FZ "On Civil Status Acts."
The agency clarified that no such cases have been recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod Region when registering names.
The registry also added that a child's given name is assigned by agreement of the parents, and the patronymic is derived from the father's name, unless otherwise provided by the laws of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation or based on national traditions.
Earlier it was reported that in 2025 the most popular names among Nizhny Novgorod residents for boys were Mikhail, Alexander and Artem, and for girls — Anna, Sofia and Victoria.
