A Nizhny Novgorod resident was injured while attempting to open a safe with an angle grinder.

      In Nizhny Novgorod, police are conducting an investigation after an incident in an apartment building on Karl Marx Street, where an explosion occurred inside a safe. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the police.

      According to preliminary information, the 90-year-old owner of the apartment tried to open the safe using an angle grinder, which could have triggered a detonation.

      The regional branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry (EMERCOM) noted that the report of the incident was received on Sunday evening. Firefighters arrived at the scene, but no signs of fire were found and their assistance was not required.

      The Interior Ministry for the Nizhny Novgorod region clarified that the owner of the apartment was injured and hospitalized. According to one version, an old ammunition item—possibly a cartridge—may have been in the safe and detonated from a spark during the attempt to open it.

      Meanwhile, the Municipal Emergency Management Center of Nizhny Novgorod insisted that it is incorrect to speak of an explosion in the building, since the structural elements of the building were not damaged and there is no threat to other residents.

      At present, law enforcement agencies continue to investigate all the circumstances of the incident.

      Earlier it was reported that a 91-year-old woman died in a fire in an apartment building in the Gidrotorf settlement of the Balakhna district.
