The opening of the exhibition "Viktor Vasnetsov. The Joy of the Righteous. Religious Painting and Graphics" (6+) took place in the Manege of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The exhibition was created with the participation of the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery.
The exhibition is the first major regional project entirely devoted to Viktor Vasnetsov's religious work. The display features more than 100 works by the artist.
All the works are intermediate stages created by Vasnetsov in the process of preparing for monumental church murals. These pieces allow viewers to trace the artist's path from concept to execution.
The core of the exhibition is composed of paintings and graphic works from the State Tretyakov Gallery collection. Among them are sketches, cartoons and compositional studies created in the 1880s–1910s for the decoration of churches in Kyiv, Warsaw, Saint Petersburg, Gus-Khrustalny and Abramtsevo.
One of the central exhibits is the triptych "Eucharist", painted in 1911 for the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Warsaw.
