Students in Nizhny Novgorod developed an AI autopilot project for cars.

An automatic vehicle control project was presented by participants of an educational intensive organized by the IT campus "NEYMARK", Yandex and the Faculty of Computer Science of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE). The defense of 22 projects was the final stage of a two‑week student camp on computer vision and autonomous transport held at HSE in Nizhny Novgorod.

“For two weeks Nizhny Novgorod became a place where almost 100 students from technical universities across our country learned and tried in practice how to teach machines to ‘see.’ The student camp is an excellent format of modern education, where motivated students, university experts and industry work together on relevant technological problems,” emphasized Gulnara Bikkulova, director of the NEYMARK University.

The students’ projects covered application areas of computer vision such as astrophysics, detection of fake images, analysis of satellite imagery and traffic conditions.

“The autopilot model proposed by the participants provides instantaneous transmission of readings from multiple sensors around the vehicle. The data are analyzed by artificial intelligence, which determines the locations of pedestrians and other vehicles, detects direction of movement and sends commands to the vehicle’s units to adjust course and speed,” the student camp organizers noted.

According to the jury, which included representatives of the IT industry and lecturers of relevant disciplines from universities in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow, the student projects—after refinement—could be integrated into existing programs for creating Russian unmanned transport. Analysts believe that in the coming years demand will grow for innovative developments and specialists in this field.

“For us, such joint educational initiatives are an opportunity to find tech‑enthusiastic young people from across the country, introduce them to cutting‑edge developments and further inspire them to solve interesting, real‑world problems. Access to real data, advanced technologies and intensive project work with experts from the autonomous transport team and university faculty gave them unique experience and skills that, we are confident, will be a serious springboard for many participants’ careers,” said Alena Rymsina, head of the ‘Studcamps’ program at Yandex Education.

The student camp program, in addition to the practical component, included theory in the field of computer vision for robotics and autonomous transport. The first week was dedicated to fundamental basics: image processing methods and 3D scene reconstruction. In the second week participants studied generative AI models for robots and developed algorithms for unmanned vehicles.

Recall that the IT campus "NEYMARK" is an interuniversity educational ecosystem. Located in Nizhny Novgorod, known for its engineering and scientific schools and IT community, the campus combines student education and advanced research, focusing on the pressing challenges of Russian industry.

By order of President Vladimir Putin, a network of modern campuses is being created in Russia. By 2030 the country is to have a “constellation” of 25 campuses. One of them has already been fully built in Moscow on the basis of Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU). At present, with the support of the national project “Youth and Children,” 24 such student campuses are being designed and constructed. By 2036 the number of campuses will increase to 40. Campus concepts envision the creation of a unique and comprehensive environment for individual and team development with many open educational spaces and transformable classrooms. This will help form a shared corporate culture among faculty, students and researchers. Project funding comes from federal and regional budgets, as well as from extrabudgetary sources. Work on this initiative is being carried out by the Government of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.

Two calls for campus creation proposals were held in total, resulting in 17 selected projects (8 projects in 2021, 9 projects in 2022). Another eight projects were identified by separate orders of President Vladimir Putin. They will be implemented in Zabaykalsky Krai, Kamchatka Krai, Primorsky Krai, Murmansk and Smolensk Oblasts, the Republic of Buryatia, and two projects in Moscow at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) and the Moscow State University of Technology “STANKIN.”
