Annually, about 50–60 thousand new cases of HIV infection are registered in Russia. This was stated by Russian Academy of Sciences academician and epidemiologist Vadim Pokrovsky in an interview with 360.ru.
He emphasized that the number of infected people in the country is constantly increasing, as new carriers are added to those already existing. Every year about 30–35 thousand people die from the consequences of HIV.
According to Rospotrebnadzor, about 1.25 million people living with HIV currently reside in Russia. These people are a source of infection, and to this should be added cases in which the infection remains undiagnosed.
Pokrovsky also noted that in some regions, especially in rural areas, there are insufficient HIV prevention measures. He stressed that significant budget funds are allocated for screening and treating patients, whereas funding for programs to educate the population about preventive measures is considerably smaller.
One of the main recommendations named by the epidemiologist to reduce the risk of infection was to reduce the number of sexual partners. He also emphasized the importance of using condoms and undergoing HIV testing together with a partner.
That said, it should be recalled that a noticeable decrease in HIV incidence has been recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In the first nine months of 2025, 23 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were registered. For comparison, in the same period in 2024 this figure was 32.6.
