The Nizhny Novgorod villages Terpishka in the Vachsky district and Varvarskoye in the Gorodetsky district have been included in the list of Russian localities with the funniest names. This was reported by TASS, citing the press service of Rosreestr.

The ranking included villages and selos from various regions of the country — among them Voronezh, Kurgan, Pskov and Moscow oblasts.

Thus, in the Moscow region one can find the villages Potselyevo and Svinoedovo, and in Krasnodar Krai — localities with cheerful names Battery and Happy Life. Voronezh Oblast has particularly many such examples: as many as 22 villages received the status of the most "funny." Among them are Chulok, Gnilusha and Plyasovo-Kitaevo.

According to political scientist and independent housing and utilities expert Pavel Sklyanchuk, the origin of such names is most often related to the history of the specific place.

"Often no one can say for sure where a particular name came from. But, in my opinion, better funny than foreign," the expert said.

He also reminded that, if necessary, any geographical name can be changed. There is Federal Law No. 152-FZ "On the Naming of Geographical Objects" for this purpose. However, according to Sklyanchuk, in practice renaming is complicated by the lack of clearly prescribed procedures and sources of funding. "Because of this the process of replacing toponyms often turns out to be difficult," the news agency's interlocutor added.

Earlier a correspondent of NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" found that every eighth populated place has a namesake in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

It was also reported that four villages in the Sokolsky district will become selos and one more will become a khutor.
