      One of the vacated buildings in the historic “Krasny Prosveshchenets” quarter in central Nizhny Novgorod is being demolished on October 20. Local residents told NewsNN and attached a video.

      Recall that the “Krasny Prosveshchenets” quarter, within the borders of Nevzorovykh, Belinsky, Ashkhabadskaya and Tverskaya streets, originated in the 1920s. It was settled by members of the city’s intelligentsia: doctors, engineers, scientists, and artists.

      In 2023 a comprehensive development project (KRT) was prepared for this and adjacent areas, which was supposed to include all the historic buildings. But people voted against it — and in the end only six houses were slated for demolition.

      Despite being excluded from the KRT, local residents were not left in peace — according to townspeople, the developer “Yunika” allegedly began buying apartments in buildings No. 17/18, 19 and 21 on Nevzorovykh Street.

      On July 18, 2025 construction equipment arrived at building No. 21 and its demolition began, despite protests from defenders of “Krasny Prosveshchenets.” It later turned out that the work was carried out without coordination with the department for state protection of cultural heritage sites. Therefore the demolition of two other houses had to be postponed.

      In mid-September the defenders of “Krasny Prosveshchenets” reported that a commission at the regional Ministry of Construction had approved the demolition of two houses and the developer had received all necessary approvals. On the morning of October 20 equipment arrived at the two‑story brick house No. 17/18 on Nevzorovykh Street — and dismantling began. Local residents are outraged, but understand that this time the work is approved.

      According to resident Tatiana Dobrotvorskaya, the struggle will continue. She told NewsNN that the defenders of “Krasny Prosveshchenets” had sent appeals to the prosecutor’s office of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and to the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation in the Volga Federal District. A letter was also sent to State Duma deputy from the Nizhny Novgorod Region Vladislav Egorov.

      “This is complete lawlessness! People are being deprived of their historical heritage! I am now preparing a statement to the ROVD of the Sovetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, we also need to appeal to the Investigative Committee of Russia to Alexander Bastrykin and prepare an appeal addressed to Governor Gleb Nikitin. Development in the city should proceed only under the KRT — openly and publicly, without behind‑the‑scenes games,” the NewsNN interlocutor noted.

      Another defender of “Krasny Prosveshchenets,” Marianna Lyubimova, said she intends to raise public awareness by involving historians, local historians and art historians. Earlier activists had already tried to have the quarter recognized as a cultural heritage site, but were refused by the department for state protection of cultural heritage sites. Nevertheless, Nizhny Novgorod residents want to try again and hope experts will help.
