Over the past week, law enforcement officers in the Nizhny Novgorod region registered 83 crimes committed using various fraud schemes.

Most often, criminals used the "Call from the bank's security service" scenario — 38 cases, "Fraud in online purchases" — 19 cases, "Offer of additional earnings" — 12 cases, as well as other methods of deception.

As clarified by the press service of the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, victims in total lost more than 44 million rubles.

The police urge people to familiarize themselves with the episodes described below in order to recognize fraud in time and avoid becoming victims of criminals.

A 56-year-old research fellow received calls from people who identified themselves as specialists from Roskomnadzor and law enforcement agencies. Under the pretext of preventing the issuance of a power of attorney that would allow control over his finances, they convinced the man to follow their instructions. Fearing for his savings, he transferred over 11,200,000 rubles to a "safe" account, then took out a loan of 3,000,000 rubles and, at the scammers' demand, handed cash to an unknown woman, packing the banknotes into a bag. The total loss exceeded 14 million rubles.

A woman from Arzamas was contacted in a messenger by an unknown interlocutor who promised additional earnings online and persuaded her to transfer her personal savings. Over three days she made several transfers totaling more than 155,000 rubles to the account provided, after which the correspondent stopped responding.

Another Arzamas resident found a listing on a classifieds website offering brake discs for 100,000 rubles. After contacting the seller, he agreed to a 100 percent prepayment to a mobile phone number the seller provided. The goods did not arrive by the agreed date and the seller's phone was unreachable.

Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were informed about the signs of fraud when buying cars through messaging apps.
