Nizhny Novgorod has been ranked among the most attractive cities for young people.

      Nizhny Novgorod turned out to be among the most attractive million-plus cities for young people considering relocation. According to a study conducted using the ROMIR Longitudinal System, one in five young people, when changing their place of residence, prefers cities such as Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk.

      Overall, 64% of Russians have a positive attitude toward their place of residence, and 79% of respondents expressed a desire to continue living where they are now. These data refute the widespread belief in a mass desire to move to the capital cities.

      The lowest level of emotional attachment to one’s hometown was recorded among young people aged 18 to 24. Only 59% of respondents in this age group reported that they like the place where they live. After age 34 this indicator stabilizes and reaches 67–70%. Only 6% of survey participants reported a negative attitude toward their locality.

      Despite the general desire to stay put, one in five Russians nevertheless does not rule out the possibility of moving. This most often concerns young people and residents of small towns. As the most desired destinations, respondents name Moscow and Saint Petersburg (32%), as well as large million-plus cities, including Nizhny Novgorod (about 16%).

      The choice of city is influenced not only by the economic situation but also by the overall quality of the urban environment. More than 70% of respondents noted that it is important for them to have public spaces, recreation areas and shops within walking distance.

      Earlier it was reported that 673 foreigners filed applications to move to the Nizhny Novgorod region.
