Demand for cash withdrawals among Russians is decreasing.

According to VTB's forecasts, cash withdrawals from Russian ATMs will decrease next year. At the same time, the share of cashless payments has already plateaued — nearly 9 out of 10 purchases are made using them. This forecast was announced at the FINOPOLIS 2025 forum by VTB board member Dmitry Breitenbikher.
Previously, the indicator for ATM cash withdrawals only grew, including this year (+3%). 2026 may change the trend — VTB forecasts that the volume of withdrawals will shrink by about 5% to 35.7 billion rubles.
At the same time the cashless payment market is growing, and VTB is growing faster than the market. Thus, by the end of 2025 VTB clients will spend 6.3 trillion rubles on their purchases — an increase of 50% compared with last year.
The rise in the share of cashless payments became possible thanks to Russians' interest in alternative instruments. Market players are launching new payment instruments and adding updated features to already launched services. A loyalty program also remains an important factor: clients receive cashback as bonuses or rubles in different categories, which encourages users to pay with cashless payment instruments. For example, participants in VTB's loyalty program receive a refund of part of their money from the bank for purchases in selected categories. At the same time, for the bank's payroll clients the return percentage and the number of categories available to choose from are higher.
"It is hard to argue that cashless payments have already become the main method of payment: Russians are beginning to withdraw less cash from ATMs and use digital services more. Our wallets are becoming more 'technological', so for VTB the development of its payment instruments remains a priority, especially since we see that VTB's digital solutions resonate with users," commented Dmitry Breitenbikher.
