A biologist revealed where the best mushroom-picking spots are in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      Ekaterina Vodeneeva, head of the Department of Botany and Zoology at the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine of Nizhny Novgorod State University (NNSU) and a Candidate of Biological Sciences, shared with the publication "We Live in Nizhny" her observations about the most mushroom-rich areas of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

      According to the specialist, the best mushroom spots are traditionally in the north of the region, where the southern taiga zone runs. Rich harvests are gathered in the Borsky, Urensky, Shakhunsky and neighboring districts.

      Many mushrooms are also found in the western part of the oblast — especially in the Volodarsky and Bogorodsky districts. These areas are also famed for their variety of forest bounty.

      Ekaterina Vodeneeva clarified that pine and birch forests are considered the most "generous." According to her, white-moss and green-moss pinewoods, pine plantations and protective forest belts consistently yield abundant harvests of mushrooms of various species.

      Earlier, a dietitian named the four most beneficial mushrooms.
