In Nizhny Novgorod, a 19-year-old local resident was drawn into a criminal scheme and deprived his grandfather of more than 3 million rubles, the regional branch of the Interior Ministry reported.
A pensioner filed a report with the police about the disappearance of 3.25 million rubles. The money went missing from a home safe. An investigative and operational team went to the scene and established the possible involvement of the applicant's grandson.
Police found that the young man was already en route by car to Vladimir Oblast. Thanks to the information passed to their colleagues, he was promptly detained.
The detainee explained that he had fallen victim to telephone fraudsters. In August, while applying for a job, he began receiving calls from people who identified themselves as employees of Rosfinmonitoring and law enforcement agencies. The callers told him that his government services account had been hacked and that a suspicious transaction had been made in his name.
Under the pretext of inspection and "declaring" the funds, the unknowns convinced the young man to take the money out of his grandfather's safe and drive it to Vladimir, where the banknotes were supposedly to be examined by experts. The young man believed that this would allow him to avoid criminal liability for a non-existent crime allegedly connected to financing a foreign state.
The young man did not manage to meet the courier — police officers prevented the handover. The money was seized in full and returned to the owner.
A criminal case has been opened on attempted fraud under Part 3 of Article 30 and Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Law enforcement is now searching for the organizers of the scheme.
It was reported that telephone fraudsters forced a woman from Nizhny Novgorod to hand over 10 million rubles.
