Some residents of Nizhny Novgorod are not ready to say goodbye to the cult phones of the 2000s and continue to use them as their main means of communication. The most popular button devices in the region remain Nokia, analysts at MegaFon noted based on anonymized subscriber data. At the same time, the transition to 4G smartphones is proceeding steadily — over the year the number of vintage-phone adherents fell by 23%.
Among users of retro phones in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, the leading group is the 35–44 age bracket, whose youth fell in the 2000s — they make up 36% of all owners. They are followed by subscribers aged 45–54 (22%), and rounding out the top three are users aged 55–64 (14%). Notably, the overwhelming majority of classic-phone enthusiasts are men (74%).
The top 5 most popular rare devices in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast are:
- Nokia 6300 — an elegant button phone from 2007 with a camera and color display;
- Nokia 1100 — the legendary 2003 handset that set sales records;
- Nokia 3310 — the cult phone from 2000, known for its unsurpassed reliability;
- APPLE IPHONE — the first smartphone, introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, which opened the world to the iconic line of Apple gadgets. At the time it stunned everyone with its minimalist design, lack of a keyboard, and the display’s ability to be controlled with two fingers, giving a surprising sense of control over the image;
- Nokia 8800E‑1 — a device with a stainless steel casing, released in 2005;
“Whatever device our subscribers use, providing high-quality, reliable connectivity remains our top priority. We are constantly working on network development to ensure a stable signal on our users’ smartphones, tablets, button phones and even on gadgets with history. This year alone we have built and modernized more than 250 telecom facilities in the region, which has improved voice service quality and data transmission speeds,” noted MegaFon’s director in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Aleksey Mikhailov.
