A foreign national who financed terrorists was detained in Nizhny Novgorod.

      FSB officers in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and Karelia detained a foreign national suspected of financing an international terrorist organization banned in Russia.

      The agency's press service said the man collected money and transferred it to militants via electronic payment systems. It was also established that he corresponded online with a person who is on the international wanted list.

      Security forces detained the suspect in Nizhny Novgorod with the support of Rosgvardiya units from the Republic of Karelia.

      Investigators of the Karelian FSB directorate have opened a criminal case on charges of aiding terrorist activities.

      In addition, the FSB found that third parties outside Russia used the detained man's bank card details to collect funds in favor of the terrorist organization.

      The foreign national is currently in custody by order of the Petrozavodsk City Court.

      Earlier it was reported that a Nizhny Novgorod resident was sentenced to 11 years in prison for pledging allegiance to a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation.
